After serving a 90-day suspension for allegedly being affiliated with an opposition political party, Oniipa mayor and Swapo member Augustus ‘Chief’ Nangolo has resumed work.

A letter dated 15 April, addressed to Nangolo by Swapo’s Oshikoto regional coordinator, Armas Amukwiyu, confirmed the lifting of the suspension.

“Following your suspension by the Oniipa district executive committee and interventions of both the Oshikoto regional executive committee and Swapo Party politburo, your suspension is lifted,” Amukwiyu wrote.

He wrote that a meeting held on 6 April, in the presence of Swapo secretary-general Sophia Shaningwa "provided a platform for reflection and reconciliation."

Amukwiyu's letter further noted: “Your demonstration of remorse and the unconditional apology you extended to the Oniipa district leadership and the entire rank and file of the Swapo Party have left an indelible impression."

Amukwiyu said Nangolo had clearly demonstrated "deep” regret for his actions.

Wrong support

Nangolo was suspended on January 16 by Amukwiyu due to alleged claims that he was affiliated with opposition party members from the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), who purportedly ensured his appointment as mayor.

Nangolo claimed he accepted the nomination from IPC members because there was no directive from the Swapo Oniipa district executive committee or Shaningwa’s office, as had been customary in the past.

Suspension allegations

While suspended, Nangolo was occupied with his private businesses and 'relaxing,' all while receiving his monthly allowance.

Nangolo claimed that Amukwiyu suspended him from his position because he did not support him at the 2022 Swapo Party elective congress.

Amukwiyu was vying for the party’s secretary-general position, a position he lost to Shaningwa.
