Namises, VON not backing anyone

Kenya Kambowe
Human rights activist Rosa Namises - who parked her plan to run as an independent presidential candidate to form a political party, which has yet to be registered - said she will not publicly back a political party or a candidate ahead of next month’s elections.

In an interview with Namibian Sun, the former Congress for Democrats (COD) secretary-general said she had aspirations of seeing her newly formed political party, Voice of Namibia (VON), on the ballot.

Namises was among many individuals who indicated that they planned to stand as independent presidential candidates. However, she cut those plans short and opted to form her political party instead, as the process is less challenging.

The application for VON was submitted to the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) in August.

However, by 16 October, during the public sitting day, VON was not yet registered, hence it cannot take part in the 27 November elections.

Coalition bloc

Convinced that ruling party Swapo will only lose the elections once the opposition parties form a coalition bloc, Namises said she and VON's leadership will not publicly endorse any political party or presidential candidate.

“As the leadership of the VON, we met and deliberated, since our members were asking 'what now'. We then agreed that it will be upon the members to decide whom they are going to vote for. As a party, we will not back any political party, nor presidential candidate,” she said.

Namises went on to say that VON will hopefully be registered with the ECN by early next year. Once that happens, the party will take part in local authority and regional council elections, she said.
