MPs urged to set aside personal issues during tenure
Speaker of the National Assembly Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila has called on members of parliament (MPs) to put aside their personal and political differences while serving in Namibia’s 8th parliament.
Addressing MPs during an induction workshop Monday, the new speaker emphasised the importance of unity and commitment to national interests over party rivalries.
"I'm pleased to see that the workshop covers a wide range of important issues relevant to the administration of our mandate," Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said.
She pointed out that while political competition is natural, it should not disrupt parliamentary proceedings.
"At the end of the day, we are collectively representatives of all Namibians, and their interests must take precedence over our political parties' interests and whatever personal differences we may have as individuals."
The induction workshop aimed to equip MPs with knowledge of legal frameworks, policies and parliamentary procedures to enhance their effectiveness.
The start of the eighth parliament coincides with the conclusion of the financial year, placing urgent responsibilities on MPs, including budget approvals for the upcoming year.
"We have to hit the ground running to meet the expectations of our people," Kuugongelwa-Amadhila urged, stressing the importance of timely decision-making. She also noted that this parliamentary term aligns with the final stretch toward Namibia’s Vision 2030, requiring MPs to focus on governance, economic growth and national development.
Govern effectively
With emerging opportunities in the green hydrogen, oil and gas sectors, the speaker warned that proper legal frameworks and strong institutions are necessary to prevent resource mismanagement. "Resources can be a curse if not properly managed, and it's up to us to ensure that there are proper laws to govern them effectively," she said.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila expressed confidence in the capabilities of parliament members, calling for active participation and a shared vision for the country’s progress. "I look forward to the effective performance of this parliament in ensuring continued governance, democracy, peace, stability and economic growth."
