LPM denies claims in fake audio clip
The Landless People's Movement (LPM) has condemned a fake audio clip that’s been making the rounds, which falsely portrays its presidential candidate Bernadus Swartbooi as making tribalistic and racially offensive remarks about the leader of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) Panduleni Itula.
LPM has vowed to take legal action if the smear campaign continues.
In a press statement issued on Monday, spokesperson Lifalaza Simataa made it clear that the audio clip is a fabrication aimed at damaging the reputations of both the LPM and IPC leadership.
"Firstly, we would like to clarify that no such utterance has ever been made by Bernadus Swartbooi and we firmly stand against such tribal and regressive sentiments," he said.
According to him, the clip first surfaced on X from an anonymous account whose only post was to share the fabrication.
‘Coordinated attempt’
"On the night of 20 October, in an amateur fashion, several other X accounts simultaneously posted the same defamatory content," Simataa said.
The posts, which went live within minutes of each other, featured an image of Swartbooi accompanied by quotes from the fake clip.
"This is a coordinated attempt at slander, and if it persists, we will take legal action against the known accounts to identify the individual or institution responsible for furthering this propaganda.”
Simataa further thanked the public for quickly pointing out the fraudulent nature of the audio clip, and encouraged social media users to report the posts if they come across them.
He added that the false statements amount to defamation of character and will be addressed through legal means if necessary.
