Khumub sworn in as new Guinas constituency councillor
Bringing healthcare closer a priority
The new councillor has vowed to address the community's most pressing issues, including access to healthcare and youth unemployment.
Newly elected Guinas constituency councillor Moses Khumub was sworn in to the Oshikoto Regional Council on Monday.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Oshikoto Regional Council chamber in Omuthiya and was presided over by Magistrate Kaeren Kleopas.
Khumub was declared the winner of the 17 January by-elections.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of former Guinas constituency councillor Elias Martinus, who died on 21 October last year.
During a brief media interview yesterday, Khumub said he will prioritise community engagements.
Address crucial community issues
He also outlined that one of the biggest challenges facing residents in the constituency is a lack of access to health facilities.
“One of the things we will look at is access to health facilities since Guinas is a vast constituency,” he said.
His comments come just days after Namibian Sun exposed how the community of Farm Ondera is forced to spend large sums of money travelling to the distant health care facilities and struggle to access healthcare when facing emergencies.
Khumub said he will engage with the health ministry to consider operating from a facility that has been constructed at Farm Ondera, which is currently used for outreach programmes.
“The infrastructure is already there – it is just a thing of arranging with the health ministry to see how we can address it,” he said.
He also said Guinas has very fertile soil for agricultural purposes, and he plans to attract investors to help develop the constituency. He believes this will help address the issue of high unemployment among the youth.
