Kauandenge won’t stand for parliament
News in short
National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) secretary-general Josef Kauandenge has announced that he will not be available to be elected to parliament in the November elections.
Kauandenge, who said he will remain secretary-general of the party, said he is not standing for parliament in order to protect his own ‘sanity and mental health’. He said he was at war with his conscience, adding “my conscience has won this battle”.
“I have served my people as a member of parliament to the best of my abilities and I cannot and will not go down in a mudslinging match with other members as we jostle for top positions on the parliamentary list,” he said in a statement released yesterday.
With party president Esther Muinjangue indicating recently that she will not seek re-election to that position, Nudo might be poised for new faces in the next parliament. The party’s elective congress was postponed for the third time recently, amid squabbles among rival factions.
