Swapo spokesperson Hilma Nicanor has denied claims made by the interim president of the Action Democratic Movement (ADM) Vinsent Kanyetu that ruling party members have been carrying firearms to political gatherings.

She told Namibian Sun that the accusations made are “baseless” and “politically motivated”, adding that Kanyetu was fabricating stories to gain political advantage ahead of the upcoming elections.

"Kanyetu must be hallucinating. Swapo would never engage in such activities. The very idea that Swapo members would carry guns to rallies is simply unimaginable. These accusations are nothing more than self-created stories by those who know they cannot defeat Swapo,” she said.

This comes after Kanyetu on Monday, at a press conference in Rundu, accused Swapo members of carrying weapons to political gatherings, calling it a clear violation of democratic principles and a threat to the nation's stability. "Political parties have no place for guns. We cannot claim to uphold democracy while allowing our members to attend meetings armed as if we are at war. This behaviour is not only a violation of our code of conduct, but also a direct threat to the safety and freedom of our people,” he said.

Report it

Nicanor questioned the need for Swapo to resort to such tactics.

"How could anyone imagine Swapo doing such things at rallies? For what reason? As our late president used to say, this country has institutions, systems and processes. Now, if we have law enforcement institutions, what's stopping them from reporting [it] to the relevant authorities?” she wanted to know.

The ruling party spokesperson also dismissed Kanyetu’s claims that Swapo members were collecting voter cards, calling it another baseless accusation.

“Collecting them for what? Where are these cards being taken, and by whom? As I said, when people have nothing to offer the nation, nothing to earn the people's trust, they resort to making all sorts of accusations. Why don't they leave Swapo alone?

"Do they think accusations will win them the trust of the people? Is that their development programme to be making such allegations? Is that what they're promising voters? Is that their development plan?"

Underhanded tactics

Nicanor emphasised that the party would never resort to such underhanded tactics. "Swapo is not the party engaging in these activities. We are committed to upholding the values of democracy and the rule of law,” she said.

Nicanor added: “These accusations are nothing but a desperate attempt to discredit us, and they won’t work”.
