Itula asks Nujoma to give up ‘first-born’

Tuyeimo Haidula
Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) leader Panduleni Itula says it is time for former president Sam Nujoma to give up the “first-born and cast his eyes on the second child”.

Referring to the ruling Swapo Party as the ‘first-born’ and his own IPC as the second child, Itula was speaking at Okandjengedi last Saturday shortly after having taken an oath to accept candidacy as the party’s sole presidential contender for the 2024 national and presidential elections.

He told the gathering of IPC members and sympathisers that Nujoma’s time has been well served, and wished him a restful retirement.

“But I have this to ask him: It is time to give up the first-born and cast your eyes to the second child.

Referring to Swapo, he said: “That one may be the one that will risk you the dream of the nation you sacrificed so much of your youth and adulthood for”.

No peace

Itula also used the platform to take a swipe at Swapo’s N$730 million head offices in Windhoek, which is located across the road from the run-down Katutura State Hospital.

He said majority of Namibians are still wallowing in poverty with little or no access to healthcare and proper sanitation. Some Namibians still do not have clean tap water 32 years after independence, he said, adding that these are but some of the conditions his party will change if voted into power.

“They are building a monstrous office opposite a dilapidated hospital. How can we possibly live in peace in this country when we are suffering?” he questioned.

Won’t remove veteran benefits

The IPC leader said some people have been decampaigning him, claiming that veterans will not receive benefits should he become president.

Itula said this is devoid of any truth as he cannot change nor break the laws of the country.

“I have my veteran's card, although I didn’t get my project. But there are those throwing fears to you. Those are lies. You will keep your money and the projects as it is. IPC will not change or break any laws,” he said.

He further pledged to uphold and respect the rights of all citizens, and said IPC will work collectively to ensure victory to guarantee that all Namibians benefit from the sacrifices made by their forefathers and -mothers.

“We are determined to ensure that policies are harmonised to benefit all Namibians, irrespective of their political affiliation or ethnic background,” he said.

Don’t steal

Prominent public figures such as Bishop Lukas Katenda, lawyer Dirk Conradie and former Omuthiya councillor Armas Amukoto were in attendance at the event.

Katenda wished Itula well and urged him not to steal or discriminate against people if he becomes president.
