Helmut Angula urges president to prioritise jobs, agriculture
Create a skilled workforce
The Swapo stalwart says the new administration should boost skills development at all levels to tackle Namibia's stark unemployment rates.
Given Namibia’s high youth unemployment rate, Swapo veteran and former Cabinet minister Helmut Angula has urged President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to prioritise job creation, particularly in agriculture and skills development, as a means to address poverty.
Angula was responding to questions this week about his views on what Nandi-Ndaitwah’s administration should focus on.
“Current national demands are decent jobs, fighting poverty, investment in the agricultural sector and provision of water, to name but a few,” Angula said.
He pointed out that in the era of advanced technology, creating a large number of jobs is a challenging prospect.
"In this regard, the president should focus on massive skills training at all levels, primary, secondary and tertiary levels, including community-based skills development. Such will create a critical mass of a skilled labour force," Angula said.
He added that the expansion of investments in infrastructure and human capital development in the livestock, poultry and artisan industries will also address poverty and boost knowledge.
Water harvesting
Angula underlined that water shortages faced by many communities in the country should also be addressed, noting that investing in water harvesting and simple water drilling offers a possible solution.
His comments come at a time when most parts of the country are experiencing good rainfall, particularly in the northern regions, where floodplains and water catchment areas are filled with flowing stormwater.
“Water shortages are exacerbated by massive ignorance in applied local technology, for example, water harvesting and simple water drilling,” he explained.
Angula said attention should also be paid towards supporting small-scale mineral ore resource processing, including scrap metal recycling.
