The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) is hosting a one-day workshop with members of the local press corps to discuss key electoral activities and timelines linked to the national elections slated for 27 November.

During the workshop, which starts today, ECN will provide an update on the execution progress of the 2024 electoral calendar.

With less than a week to go before the general registration of voters (GRV) commences, the electoral body will also provide information on the rollout of the GRV process as well as voter and civic education campaigns.

“The purpose of the workshop is to share key electoral activities and timelines as well as progress made in the process for the 2024 general registration of voters. This GRV serves as the foundation for the conduct of presidential and National Assembly elections,” ECN’s chief electoral and referenda officer, Peter Shaama, said in a media invitation recently.

The commission has identified 4 297 registration points in all 121 constituencies across the country, with 3 849 registration officials to be deployed at all the points.

Close to voters

Shaama said the registration points were determined based on various factors, such as population density, in terms of the preliminary population statistics report released by the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA).

“The location of the registration points takes into account accessibility by the populace, distances, previous registration statistics and the duration of the registration process. The commission has endeavoured to ensure that the registration points are strategically located to reach a wide range of eligible voters. Some registration points will be fixed at certain places for the duration of the registration period, while others will be served on a mobile basis,” he said.

Be counted

The 2024 GRV is scheduled to take place from 3 June to 1 August, a period of 52 days.

Registration points will be open from 08:00 to 19:00, Monday to Saturday, throughout the country and at all Namibian diplomatic missions abroad.

The preliminary statistics released by the NSA on 13 March indicate that the population has increased to 3 022 401. According to the population census, 1 731 790 Namibian citizens are eligible to register as voters.

Therefore, based on experiences and lessons learnt during the 2014 GRV period, meticulous planning has gone into the preparations for the 2024 GRV, given the resources invested in the execution of this process.

“The commission is therefore urging all eligible voters, who turned 18 years and older, to register during the 2024 GRV period at all established registration points in the constituencies where they reside,” Shaama concluded.
