APP reaffirms commitment to LGBTQ equality
The All People's Party (APP) is steadfast in its commitment to uphold human rights and equality for all Namibians, including those from the LGBTQ community, said the party’s deputy president Linus Muchila.
Speaking at the party’s manifesto launch in Rundu last weekend, he said APP stands firm in defending the constitutional rights of every Namibian, regardless of their background, identity or sexual orientation. "The APP supports and defends the fundamental human rights of all Namibians, regardless of who you are, where you come from or your orientation. This is a constitutional mandate, and anyone who opposes this is an enemy of the Namibian Constitution.”
Referring to other political parties that have adopted an anti-gay stance, he said: “You want your rights to be respected, but you don’t want to respect others' rights. Who are you?"
He further challenged political parties to show where their constitutions allow for the rejection of fundamental human rights. "We would like to see their draft constitution and see where it says they don’t support the fundamental human rights of all Namibians. Yet, when they come forward, they want to lie to you. It's in the constitution of Swapo, it's in the constitution of the Popular Democratic Movement, it's in every political party's constitution in Namibia," he said.
Fighting hate crimes
As part of its agenda, APP is committed to fighting hate crimes and discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or disability, he said.
If voted into power, the party aims to “push for comprehensive hate crime legislation and ensure these laws are strictly enforced. This includes proper training for law enforcement and judicial officials to handle such cases effectively”.
Muchila added that the APP will work to create safe and inclusive environments where members of the LGBTQ community are protected, respected and valued.
"This will involve advocating for policies that promote inclusivity in schools, workplaces and public spaces. Additionally, the party plans to encourage public dialogue around identity and sexuality to foster greater understanding and acceptance within society,” he said.
