Shikongo holds no ambition for top job
Namibian police Major General Joseph Shikongo says he holds no ambitions to replace retiring Namibian Police Inspector General Sebastian Ndeitunga.
Shikongo said it is the Namibian president’s prerogative to appoint the administrative head of the police force.
Ndeitunga is set to retire next month when he turns 60.
Shikongo made these comments on the sidelines of a police community outreach visit to Rehoboth, during which law enforcement and the community discussed the town's drug abuse problem.
Shikongo’s career as a police officer spans 32 years, as per his LinkedIn profile. In April 2021, he was promoted to the rank of major general and appointed as the deputy inspector general for operations.
“Whether my name is on or not, that is the prerogative of the president. That post, you don’t apply for it, that post the president appoints,” he explained.
“I do not even have an ambition, the president has the prerogative whomever he wants to appoint as the Inspector General,” Shikongo said.
He further explained that the president is the only appointing authority, and will make a decision following recommendations from the security commission.
In terms of the constitution, the security commission will make recommendations to the president on the appointment of the chief of the defence force and the police, as well as the commissioner general of correctional services.
The commission is composed of the chairperson of the public service commission, the chief of the defence force, the police chief, the intelligence service’s head, the prison chief and two members of the National Assembly, appointed by the president on the recommendation of the National Assembly.
