Search for missing Swiss man (83) continues
Last seen late Sunday in Sesriem area
The police have launched a large-scale search involving over 50 people, a helicopter, drones and search dogs.
A Swiss tourist, 83-year-old Alois Ottiger, has been missing since Sunday in the Sesriem area.
According to the Namibian Police crime investigations coordinator for the Hardap Region, Deputy Commissioner John Mwatongwe, an immediate and extensive search operation for the missing man has been launched.
He said a police helicopter, officers, special field units and trained search dogs have been deployed, as well as gyrocopters, drones and a search team of more than 50 people.
"I was on the scene myself with many police officers who are part of the search group, but the man has disappeared without a trace," Mwatongwe said to Network Media Hub (NMH) yesterday.
Ottiger reportedly went on a hiking trip on Sunday from the Desert Hills Lodge’s luxury tented camp, located about 30 km from Sesriem, and never returned. He was last seen around 18:00 wearing white clothes. He is 1.73 metres tall, with grey hair and a moustache.
Ottiger, a widower from Lucerne, was travelling with a tour group in Namibia and is described as fit and someone who regularly participates in outdoor activities.
Police officers from Maltahöhe, Mariental and Windhoek, along with search teams, are still on the scene and are tirelessly searching for the missing man.
Mwatongwe is particularly concerned because Ottiger has been without water for several days.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Mwatongwe at 081 246 1121.
