Police to help businesses move cash

STAFF REPORTER
After two armed robberies in Windhoek and Swakopmund within about an hour of each other on Monday, the Namibian Police has appealed to business owners to contact the Office of the Inspector-General if they need assistance to move cash to and from the premises of their business.

Although at this stage the police cannot confirm whether the two cases are related, they said the suspects in the Windhoek robbery escaped with about N$430 000, while those at the coast got away with N$348 515.40.

One suspect was arrested on Tuesday evening in Windhoek's Hakahana settlement. The car in which the suspects got away was found, while a shotgun - believed to belong to a security guard who was allegedly held at gunpoint - as well as a backpack containing clothes and a bulletproof vest, and N$17 000 were also found with this suspect.

In a statement, the police assured the public of their safety and said that there is no need to fear a repeat of the crimes. The police also appealed to the suspects and especially the youth to understand the seriousness of the crime. "This is not a game, but a serious crime with serious punishments. If they get involved, we will deal with them," police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said.

She shared that in the run-up to the elections and the festive season, the police are stepping up their patrols, while urging members of the public not to carry a lot of cash with them.
