Police in the Oshana Region have emphasised their duty to educate young Namibians about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse.

Chief Inspector Thomas Aiyambo, head of the police community sub-division, stressed that police officers have as much of a duty to educate young Namibians as teachers. He was speaking during a recent police regional education campaign.

Aiyambo said while the police alone cannot eradicate homelessness, eliminate violence or end drug abuse, they will nevertheless work hard towards achieving these goals with the hope of reducing crime in communities.

The police's regional education campaign aims to raise awareness among schools and educate learners about the dangers of alcohol and drugs.

Aiyambo and colleagues visited Okadila Combined School and conducted a demonstration of how their K-9 dogs (trained police dogs) can detect hidden drugs.

“Alcohol and drug abuse are bad for you. It will reduce your concentration levels at school and you will not pass. You need to stay away so that you can complete school. We do not want to arrest you, as the use of it is illegal as well,” he said.

Productive members of society

Sergeant Victor Nghilengwa joined the conversation and warned learners indulging in illicit substances about the possible consequences.

Nghilengwa said many children have formed gangs where they bully other learners at school, resulting in poor performance and dropouts.

“The gangster life does not pay, and the end result is either prison or death. You do not need to throw away your life for a few minutes of fun or to try and fit in with your friends. Find the right friends and make the right choices,” he told learners, urging them to make their parents proud.
