One dead, six injured

One person died and six others were injured in a car accident in the Omaruru district.

A man lost his life and six others were injured in a single-vehicle accident in the Omaruru district.

The head of community policing in the Erongo region, Inspector Ileni Shapumba, confirmed the incident saying it happened at 11:20, 10 km from Omaruru toward the Walfrieden gravel road.

The deceased was identified as Hefeni Ndahalele Atanasius (29). His next of kin has been informed.

According to Shapumba, the JAC double cab was travelling with six occupants on board. "The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, causing serious injuries to passengers. One occupant was thrown out of the vehicle and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The other occupants were attended to and taken to Omaruru State Hospital for treatment," he said, adding that three victims (including the driver) sustained serious injuries while the other two victims sustained mild injuries.

In a separate incident, a 67-year-old man from Walvis Bay committed suicide by shooting himself in the head on Saturday morning.

Shapumba confirmed the incident that happened around 05:30 at a house in Khomas Hochland Street, Kuisebmund. "A report was received about a man identified as Nghilalulwa Johannes, who allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in the head during the early hours of the morning. According to the provided information, Shihafeleni woke up early morning and greeted everyone in the house before going out. At around 06:00, a 16-year-old girl went outside to fetch her face cloth from the washing line when she observed Shihafeleni's body lying next to the washing line in a pool of blood," he said

"She allegedly ran inside the house and called the caretaker," Shapumba said, adding that it is suspected that the deceased committed suicide with a pistol. Medical personnel from Walvis Bay State Hospital were notified and attended to the report. His next of kin has been informed.
