Ndeitunga submits list of possible successors to Geingob

Ogone Tlhage
Namibian Police inspector general Sebastian Ndeitunga, who is retiring at the end of this month, has submitted a list of his potential successors to President Hage Geingob.

Speaking to Namibian Sun on Sunday, Ndeitunga, a decorated officer of the law, said there should be no worry over who will succeed him as he has trained his subordinates well.

The police chief is appointed by the president on recommendation of the Security Council, but the head of state has the final say.

The Security Council is a constitutional body consisting of the chairperson of the Public Service Commission, the chief of the Namibian Defence Force, the police inspector general, the commissioner general of the correctional service, the head of the Namibia Central Intelligence Services and two members of parliament, appointed by the president.

No fear

Ndeitunga is set to take his final bow on 31 August, marking the end of his 17-year reign as the administrative head of the police force.

“The choice is given to the appointing authority, I don’t want to influence the decision. I submitted a few names. The appointing authority will look at their curriculum vitaes.

“There should be no fear of the unknown. I have prepared them, they are ready to take over,” he said.

Ndeitunga was eagerly looking forward to his last day as inspector general.

“I am so ready, I want 31 August to come. I want to say goodbye to everyone,” he said.

From cattle herder to police chief

He also expressed pride in the teachers who educated him, saying they displayed confidence in his abilities to one day amount to something.

“I give gratitude to my Cuban teachers. I was a cattle herder and I became an inspector general of the Namibian Police,” he said.

Ndeitunga further thanked his comrades and the Swapo Party.

“I want to say goodbye to everyone. I want to thank my commanders and comrades. I want to thank the Swapo Party, Nkrumah Mushelenga, Dino Hamwaambo, Niilo Taapopi.”
