Kunene inaugurates new Opuwo police headquarters
Police set to recruit 2 000 new officers in 2025
President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah praised the efforts made to complete the project.
The Kunene Region has welcomed a newly constructed regional police headquarters in Opuwo with the aim of enhancing service delivery and strengthening public safety in the area.
Officially inaugurated on Tuesday, the police headquarters boasts an array of features, including a 44-office administration block, nine record rooms, two reception areas, a boardroom and facilities such as a radio room, server room and logistics warehouse.
Additionally, the complex includes a vehicle clearance building, public ablution facilities, two guard houses, covered parking bays, access roads and a standby generator to ensure uninterrupted operations.
During her keynote address, President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndeitwah thanked the safety and security ministry for swiftly completing the project.
“This inauguration marks a significant step in strengthening law enforcement infrastructure in the Kunene Region, reflecting the government’s continued commitment to improving public safety and service delivery across Namibia,” she said.
More police to be trained
She also referenced the Swapo manifesto, highlighting that the project aligns with the party's pledge to create over half a million jobs within five years.
“The construction industry is one sector that can create jobs," Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasised.
To address a shortage of police officers, Nandi-Ndaitwah said there is a possibility of training 2 000 officers next year.
“Currently, there are about 1 700 recruits who are undergoing training in various training centres of the police, and earlier this year, 1 060 recruits completed their police training and graduated in Oshakati”.
She concluded by urging Opuwo residents to work with the police and to help maintain the new facility.
