Fatal car crash claims four lives

Nikanor Nangolo
A fatal road accident on the Trans Caprivi Highway near Shikenge village in the Kavango East Region on Sunday has claimed the lives of four people, including two correctional officers, following a high-speed collision, according to police.

According to Kavango East police crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu, the fatal crash occurred around 19:40 within the Ndiyona policing area.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a sedan was travelling at high speed from east to west when it attempted to overtake another vehicle.

"In the process, the Volkswagen collided head-on with a Toyota seven-seater, which was travelling in the opposite direction. The impact resulted in the immediate deaths of the driver and passenger in the correctional service vehicle, as well as the driver of the seven-seater, who was trapped inside the wreckage," Kanyetu said.

"Eyewitnesses managed to extinguish a fire that broke out in the correctional service vehicle following the collision. They also rescued a passenger from the burning vehicle, while the driver had already been ejected due to the force of the impact," Kanyetu added.

Fatalities and injuries

The deceased have been identified as Eliakim Natangwe Angala (39), the driver of the correctional service vehicle; Samson Njuva (49), a passenger in the correctional service vehicle; Anton Shinkanda, driver of the seven-seater and Elisabeth Nduva Mbangu (43), who succumbed to her injuries at Nyangana Catholic Hospital.

The two late correctional officers were returning from an official trip from Divindu Correctional Facility to Elizabeth Nepemba Correctional Facility, where they were stationed, Kanyetu noted.

Several passengers from the seven-seater sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Rundu State Hospital. They include Solastica Mahongo, who suffered multiple serious injuries and was transferred to Windhoek in critical but stable condition, and her two-year-old child, who is in high care but stable condition. Joakim David (49, who sustained fractures to his right leg and right palm and is in stable condition) and Petrus Diwanga suffered multiple injuries but remains in stable condition.
