Erongo police urge public to be on their best behaviour
As the festive season approaches, Erongo police spokesperson Chief Inspector Ileni Shapumba says the police are ready to welcome visitors and safeguard the community.
"We are combat ready and prepared to receive visitors and ensure the safety and security of our people and their properties," he said this week.
He noted that the police have been fortified with additional manpower, including members of the Special Reserve Force, to boost the policing efforts in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. Officers from regional headquarters will also be deployed to various towns, including Henties Bay, Omaruru, Karibib, Usakos and other inland areas.
Shapumba highlighted the increased focus on traffic safety, with day-to-day crime prevention operations, traffic duties, checkpoints and random patrols planned throughout the region.
"Based on experience, we know that during the festive season, cases of robbery, drunk driving and housebreaking increase. We have already arrested several individuals for drunk driving," Shabumba said.

Shabumba thanked the public for their response so far to safety efforts and praised the support of stakeholders, the neighbourhood watch, reservists and corporate institutions.
"We urge road users to prioritise their safety. Don't allow yourself to be in a vehicle with a reckless driver or in a car that isn't roadworthy," he added.
He further emphasised the importance of responsible behaviour, both on the roads and in public spaces, discouraging the use of alcohol in public and any conduct that compromises public safety.
Event organisers are reminded to follow local authority procedures and obtain prior permissions to ensure crowd control and safety, he emphasised.
Police stations and hotlines are operational 24/7, ready to assist the public. "When you see anything suspicious, report it immediately. We are here to protect you", he added.
