The Bank of Namibia (BoN) on Monday donated gym equipment valued at more than N$300 000 to the women and men in uniform in the Oshana Region.

Previously, police officers kept fit at an outdoor boot camp held once a month, Oshana Police regional commander Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria said.

Sakaria said their fitness routines will now be boosted with an indoor workout.

He thanked the bank for the donation, saying it is more than just equipment for the police force – it is an investment in the officers' well-being and future.

“The importance of fitness in policing cannot be overstated. Physical fitness helps police officers with endurance and reduces injury. Fitness also helps the officers with mental health so they can perform their duties effectively,” Sakaria said.

He underlined that policing involves long patrol hours, which take both an emotional and physical toll on officers. The gym, he said, will now provide them with a space to rejuvenate.

Sakaria also emphasised that a fit police force contributes to a safer and more efficient community for all. He underlined that the donation would be responsibly managed and utilised as intended, benefitting both the officers and the communities they serve.

Backbone of a safe society

BoN director of currency management and banking operations, Sencia Kaizemi-Rukata, said the police play a crucial role in upholding law and order, describing them as the backbone of society.

Kaizemi-Rukata said the demanding nature of police work requires both mental resilience, physical strength and endurance.

“Thus, we hope the gym equipment provided will serve as a valuable resource to support your physical fitness and overall wellness,” she said.

She noted that, given the support the bank receives from law enforcement officers, it is only fitting to contribute to their fitness and wellness in recognition of their hard work.
