Two people lost their lives in separate knife attacks over the weekend, while another man was hospitalised after being assaulted by members of the public in retaliation for an alleged stabbing incident in the Kavango East Region.

Namibian police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, confirmed the fatalities, saying that both incidents involved arguments that escalated into deadly violence.

On Saturday around 17:20, in the Riverside location, Bethanie district of the ǁKaras Region, Johannes Swartbooi (42) was fatally stabbed in the chest following an argument with a 26-year-old man. The suspect was arrested and the murder weapon was recovered.

In another incident, on Sunday, between 01:00 and 02:00, at YB-INN Bar in Tseiblaagte, Keetmanshoop, Alfred Gariseb (40) died instantly after being stabbed multiple times with a hunting knife. The suspect, a 32-year-old man, allegedly attacked Gariseb following a dispute over text messages found on his girlfriend’s phone. The suspect was arrested and the weapon was recovered.

Community retaliates

Meanwhile, in Kavango East, a man was hospitalised on Saturday after being attacked by members of the public. The assault was reportedly in retaliation for his allegedly stabbing his girlfriend multiple times at Thikanduko village around 04:00.

According to Shikwambi, the 41-year-old woman sustained serious injuries, including open wounds to her back, shoulder, neck and head. She was rushed to Andara Hospital before being transferred to Rundu State Hospital in critical condition.

The suspect was arrested and is currently receiving medical treatment at Andara Hospital after the community assault.
