Principal granted bail over alleged N$400 000 insurance scam

Accused of claiming N$431 000 following housebreaking
Police said the investigation revealed that the address provided by the accused on the insurance claim, where the alleged housebreaking occurred, was not her home but a place she had stayed at as a guest.

Insu Primary School principal Theresia Ngondo (44), who faces fraud charges for allegedly fabricating a housebreaking incident to claim N$431 688 from an insurance company, was granted bail of N$5 000 in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Ngondo made her first appearance before magistrate Matilda Kauyu, who postponed her case to 5 February 2025.

According to Namibian police crime investigations coordinator for the Kavango East Region, Deputy Commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu, Ngondo was arrested for insurance fraud following an alleged false report of a housebreaking incident she claimed took place on 21 October in Rundu's Tjinga Valley between 08:00 and 17:00.

Ngondo reportedly misrepresented the facts in an attempt to deceive her insurance company by submitting a claim for a list of items, including four queen-sized beds, two 80-inch TVs, a 55-inch Samsung TV, a lounge suite, a home theater system, a TV stand, a Defy gas stove, a double-door fridge, a long deep freezer, a microwave, two fans, a coffee table, mats, a pressure cooler, laundry baskets, food items, an HP laptop, jewellery, camping chairs and bicycles.

Not her house

Kanyetu added that the investigation revealed that the house she claimed had been broken into did not belong to her; rather, she had been staying as a guest for a weekend.

“Additionally, many of the items she reported stolen were never present at the guest house. As a result of the findings, the insurance claim for N$431 688 was declined,” he said.
