Police alert public to recruitment scam targeting applicants

Elizabeth Kheibes
The Namibian Police has warned it is experiencing a rise in complaints from the public who have fallen victim to scams during an ongoing police cadet constable recruitment.

"It is noted that shortlisted candidates (victims) are targeted by suspects who pretend to be from the police recruitment office in Windhoek. As alleged, a victim will receive a call from the so-called police officers, who ask questions relating to qualifications as well as first aid certificates,"a statement by the police explained.

“The suspects then demand a payment of around N$800, explaining to the victim that by paying the amount, the applicant would bypass normal procedures to obtain a first aid certificate in case they do not have it," the statement read.

Stern warning

Police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, said the suspects deliberately use police ranks to conceal their identities and to make the public believe they are authentic.

She said two cell phone numbers are being used by the scammers, namely 081 436 4903 and 081 436 4929.

"The Namibian Police herewith issues a stern caution to public members, particularly the shortlisted candidates and their relatives, to be vigilant and never to entertain calls from strangers who are requesting money for recruitment processes," Shikwambi said.
