JUST IN: 12 people in vehicle accident
One person died on Monday when a vehicle with 12 occupants travelling from Okahumbara village in Omatjete area to Walvis Bay experienced a tire burst and left the road on Monday 2 January 2023.
The unit commander for community affairs in the Erongo region, inspector Ileni Shapumba, confirmed the incident which took place at about 18:50 and an estimated 2.5km before Karibib on the Omaruru road.
"We are investigating a case of culpable homicide. Juliana Katjinongo (44) succumbed to head injuries she sustained in the accident. Her was taken to Karibib Health Centre for further handling. The police will conduct a postmortem to determine the cause of death."
Shapumba said that there were about 12 occupants in the silver Opel Corsa with registration number N 539 OV travelling from Omaruru towards Karibib.
"The right rear tyre burst. This caused the driver (39) to lose control and the vehicle left the road and rolled over. One passenger succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while other passengers sustained serious to slight injuries. Four kids aged under 10 were amongst those who sustained slight injuries. All the injured persons were stabilised on the scene and transported to Usakos and Omaruru state hospitals for medical attention."
