Oshana police host successful sports day

Tuyeimo Haidula
Oshana region police on Saturday held their first ever street mile and fun walk at Oshakati, attracting over 50 participants.

Oshana regional commander Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria and Ongwediva mayor Taarah Shalyefu joined the participants and completed a six-kilometre walk.

Participants in the juniors, para-athletic, and legend categories all took part in a 1.6-kilometre race.

Julius ‘Blue Machine’ Indongo, the undefeated IBF super-lightweight world champion who initiated the event, said the event marked the beginning of bigger and better sporting events in the region.

Indongo said the fun walk and run event was aimed at raising funds for the Namibian Police National Championship slated to take place between 6 and 17 September at Outjo in the Kunene Region.

Sakaria said this will be an annual event for the police in the region and encouraged communities to take part in sporting activities.

He said they want to improve the state of sports in the region.

"We will come out full force next year. We were just testing the water, and as you can see, this was a success. We are very happy and looking forward to having active citizens," Sakaria said.
