Hantie Jansen brings Namibian flavour to kykNET cooking show

'We can learn to be bolder'
Jansen believes Namibian cuisine is on par with South African cuisine but could benefit from more adventurous experimentation and increased collaboration among chefs.

“We eat when we cry and we eat when we're happy,” Namibian chef Hantie Jansen says about her family, a way of life she credits as the origin of her love of cooking.

Jansen will soon appear on screen as one of the contestants in the new season of kykNet’s 'Kokkedoor: Vuur en Vlam', an Afrikaans reality cooking programme aimed at finding the "perfect combination of traditional and modern cooks to bring South African home-cooked food into the 21st century," according to kykNET.

"I don’t think there was ever a time I didn’t want to do what I’m doing now," Jansen said yesterday during an interview with Network Media Hub.

Once-in-a-lifetime experience

Speaking about her experience on the Kokkedoor set, Jansen, who helms the catering company Sage, said: "I learned so many new things – it’s amazing how much one can learn from the experienced chefs and how well people cook at home."

She formed close bonds with the other contestants during the production of the series. "I met such incredible people – it’s such a cliché, but it’s true. I don’t think I disagreed with any of the other contestants."

Dare more

Jansen believes that the Namibian culinary experience should not be considered less important than the experience in South Africa. "I think we’re fairly where we need to be – we’re definitely not behind in our knowledge and skills. I just think we can learn to be bolder," she said.

"I think we’re a bit rigid – we like a schnitzel and a steak. I think we could benefit from experimenting more and from chefs collaborating more. Many South African chefs make opportunities when they work together, and that leads to better and more interesting things".

Jansen will appear as of Thursday, 6 February, at 20:00 in the new season of Kokkedoor: Vuur en Vlam.
