Happy birthday, Comrade Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma!
On 12 May 1929, a giant was born in north-western Namibia. Unknown then, comrade Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma grew up like any other ordinary child in the village, looking after cattle and goats and taking part in various household chores.
But as the years passed, the cruel reality of apartheid colonialism began to shape his outlook. As one of the early enlightened freedom fighters in the 1950s and 1960s, he was among those who formed Swapo in 1960.
At the helm of Swapo, from its inception, Comrade Nujoma provided unsurpassed leadership throughout, marked by historic decisions, the greatest of which was taken in 1966 – the decision to wage an armed struggle, marking the start of change for the apartheid regime.
It was a long march to freedom, littered with marked and unmarked graves, in which precious lives were laid down to rest in glorious eternal peace and glory! Through it all, comrade Nujoma led Namibia's armed liberation struggle with a majestic sense of purpose, culminating in Namibia's independence on 21 March 1990.
As we join you to celebrate your deserved 95th birthday, I wholeheartedly wish you a blessed happy birthday! There will never be another Sam Nujoma! You are the one and only one!
