EDITORIAL: Youth no longer wasted on the young

It is said, perhaps unfairly, that young people often fail to recognise or seize the opportunities offered by their youth. This implies that the youth's energy, vitality and time are frequently wasted because they don't grasp the value of their youthfulness.

In essence, it's a reflection on how youth can be fleeting and how its true value is often realised only in retrospect. The Namibian youth are seemingly crawling out of this shell, judging by recent events and indices.

First, the Electoral Commission of Namibia recently announced that of the 1.4 million voters registered for the November election, 900 000 of them are young people.

Second, the recent Popular Democratic Movement central committee election was won by young people, sending many elders into premature retirement.

Third, the Swapo electoral college last weekend left many party veterans licking their wounds and holding onto their future prospects by a thread. This morning, the Independent Patriots for Change is set to announce its own candidates for parliament, following an elective conference. The nation will be following these developments closely to see whether the pattern of recent weeks has also gripped this new kid on the block.

What is clear amid all this is that a silent revolution is brewing among the young masses. In just over two months, we would know whether this new surge of energy and appetite is to change the status quo, maintain it, or if it’s just a scramble for positions.
