EDITORIAL: When lands were green

If Bernhardt Esau and Mike Nghipunya were in the same courtroom this week, they would constantly have to be pulled apart. Each man has accused the other of being the mastermind of the Fishrot thievery during their bail applications.

What they both seem to have unwittingly confirmed – perhaps by default as the heat in the kitchen soars – is that indeed the ruling party Swapo has received funds from Fishcor. The money left the state entity wearing the jacket of ‘governmental objectives’ because everyone involved knew it's illegal for public enterprises to fund a particular political party.

Some of the funds were to feed Swapo fat cats at Rosh Pinah, where a gala dinner was held. For what it’s worth, Esau was chairperson of the Swapo leaders assigned to the //Karas Region.

You see, there is no honour among thieves. And, as the Bible teaches us in the book of Luke, whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.

The Fishrot camaraderie that greeted the flashing cameras of the media in the formative days of this landmark case is crumbling like a sand castle. It’s now every man for himself and God for all of them. But when lands were green and skies blue, these men were the cocks of the walk. Now, as it appears, they are mere feather dusters.
