EDITORIAL: Time to turn attention to men

Many problems faced by women today are blamed on men, but we have seen a surge in incidents – some of them fatal – in which men are victims of women’s actions or behaviour.

With a surge in the wave of feminism and soaring incidents of femicide, the plight of men has been inadvertently lost and forgotten, leaving the Namibian man to fend for himself.

This month has been particularly difficult for Namibian men. The number of suicides reported in recent days - often involving men who had issues in their intimate relationships – is heartbreaking. And no, we are not blaming women for the ordeal. We are simply saying society ought to pay more attention to the condition of the man, in similar fashion as it does for women.

Even with the birth of male advocacy organisations like Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW) in the United States, there is no denying that men and women are meant to co-exist in intimate arrangements.

But we have started to observe an increase in the self-ownership of the modern man, who preserves and protects his own sovereignty for his own sake and sanity.

Society’s fault in all this is preaching silly preconceptions and cultural definitions of what a ‘man’ is. Looking to no one else for social cues, and asking for no shoulder to cry on.
