EDITORIAL: Namibia’s potential must not go to waste

"Namibians are too few to be poor." These words, spoken by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah during her election campaign and echoed again yesterday at the opening of Cabinet, ring with undeniable truth.

Namibia is a land of vast horizons and hidden riches, where the desert meets the ocean in a breathtaking dance of contrast. Beneath our golden dunes and rugged mountains lie treasures that many nations can only dream of – diamonds, uranium, fisheries and the promise of a renewable energy revolution.

And yet, too many of our people still wake up to the ache of hunger, to the weight of unemployment, to dreams deferred by an economy that does not work for them.

How can a nation so blessed remain shackled by struggle?

Look to Japan – a land of crowded islands, barren of great mineral wealth, yet home to one of the world’s most formidable economies. Meanwhile, Namibia, with its sprawling landscapes and untapped bounty, lingers on the margins of prosperity.

We need more than just speeches and ambitions; we need a great awakening of mindset and will. Leadership must be forged in the fire of accountability, driven not by self-interest but by a deep, unwavering commitment to the people. We must reject complacency, dismantle corruption and cultivate an economy that is not merely extractive but transformative.

It is time to build industries that refine our resources at home, to invest in education that does not just inform but empowers, to create opportunities that inspire our youth to dream without limits.

The winds of change are stirring. Will we seize them, or will we let them slip through our fingers like grains of desert sand?
