EDITORIAL: A paradox of plenty

Namibia is a land of contrasts, a place where abundance meets adversity. It echoes a profound remix of Mahatma Gandhi’s timeless observation: “There is enough for everyone’s needs, but not enough for everyone’s greed.”

With a modest population of 3 million, Namibia should indeed be a beacon of prosperity. Instead, we are ensnared in a cruel paradox: a land rich in gold, diamonds, uranium, and copper, yet burdened by deepening poverty. The wealth flows, but not to those who need it most.

Namibia does not lack resources; it lacks equity. The deliberate misallocation of wealth has left millions in the shadows. Our designation as an upper-middle-income country has only added to our woes. Aid organisations, seeing Namibia as self-sufficient, have moved on, leaving the vulnerable to fend for themselves in a system skewed against them.

The heart of this crisis lies in greed and the failure to confront it. Leadership that prioritises the well-being of the people over personal gain is the missing piece of our puzzle. Look to China, a nation that has placed its citizens at the center of governance. Through deliberate policies and bold leadership, they’ve reduced absolute poverty by 98%.

Namibia has the tools to transform its reality. What we lack is the courage to wield them justly. The time for rhetoric has passed. It’s action—equitable, intentional, and resolute—that will ensure we are no longer “too few to be poor.”
