Under the theme “Promoting behaviour change among young road users” the National Youth Council (NYC) launched its 11th national week last week at the Namibia Development Corporation.
The NYC national week celebrate sport and cultural development among the youth and also raise awareness around certain issues. This year, road safety is placed under the spotlight.
Speaking during the launch Erastus Uutoni, the minister of sports, youth and national services, said the youth should be encouraged and convinced to change their behaviour on the roads. “Our theme therefore, is a response to the youth related violations of traffic rules and regulations,” he said.
The 2018 national youth week will commence on 23 and last until 27 April. The aim is to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution that young Namibians make to develop the country.
Uutoni also mentioned that according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2014, Namibia was ranked first in terms of road deaths per capita. He also stated that most fatalities recorded on Namibian roads are young road users between the ages of 20 to 35 years.
The NYC was established in March 1994 to foster a spirit of national identity and to address the obstacles facing young people in the country.
