Western Spurs award their best
Attacking midfielder Akio van Wyk was named the most valuable player of Western Spurs Football Club at the club’s award ceremony on Saturday in Walvis Bay.
Van Wyk captains the side, which competes in the Southern Stream first division and finished fifth in the recently concluded 2015/2016 season.
Spurs competed in the Erongo second division before its owners on the advice of Boeta Mouton and with assistance from Rojo van Wyk bought the first-division status of Windhoek-based Kaizen Football Academy last year.
Lionel van Schalkwyk, who joined the club midway through the season from Blue Waters and scored seven goals, pocketed the top goal scorer’s award. Ruhwall Mclobo was named young player of the year and McDonald !Geib the most valuable player of the season.
Sakaria Gabriel was named the most dedicated player and Andrew Jagger the players’ player of the year.
Tyrone Mouton, who has been involved with the club for over 15 years, also received recognition.
Sponsor and former soccer player Angelo Mentoor told the players that the road had not been smooth with numerous coaches and players coming and going throughout the season.
“We are all here because we love the beautiful game. Your inaugural season of competing in the first division was definitely not an easy exercise. The target is to gain promotion into the premier league. This won’t be easy but is achievable with support, commitment and dedication from the players.”
Chairman Nico Freygang paid tribute to various individuals who contributed and ensured that the club was in a position to honour its league obligations.
“The past season was tough and we could not maintain momentum. There are many people investing to keep the team alive and tonight’s function is proof of that.
“Our players need to improve their attitude if we want to take the team to the premier league.
“I am confident that we can achieve this. Those who received awards deserve it.
“The new season will commence in October. We will start practising in August and would like to strengthen the goalkeeping aspect of the squad for the upcoming season.”
