The Down Touch Griffons slaughtered the Windhoek Draught Welwitchias 101-0 (halftime 54-0) in a one-sided provincial tournament 15-try massacre at the Hage Geingob Stadium.
The demolition job was complete by halftime with the visitors running off the park for a glass of orange juice with 54 points already on the board, but the effort could easily have been undone with a loss of concentration. This was not to be as the Griffons ran in a further seven tries without reply to complete the massacre.
Flyhalf George Whitehead missed just two kicks at goal, completing 13 conversions on a day of what seemed like kicking practice for the man from Welkom.
The Griffons opened the scoring as early as the eighth minute when right wing Selvyn Davids dashed over in the corner. The visitors scored another two converted tries and were sitting pretty with a 19-point lead midway through the first half with Dirk Grobbelaar and left wing Warren Williams dotting down for their first tries.
Tertius Maarman then grabbed his first try as the fullback joined the line well before hooker Neil Rautenbach barged his way over the line. Davids then raced in for his second try of the afternoon and with Whitehead converting, the Griffons were out of sight with a 40-point
lead.
Maarman and Grobbelaar crossed the whitewash again before the half was out as the Griffons led 54-0 at halftime.
Despite a whole host of substitutions by both sides in the second stanza, the one-way traffic continued and the Griffons were back into scoring mode just five minutes into the second period when loose head prop Daniel van der Merwe rumbled over the line.
Williams crossed the line twice more to seal his hat-trick of tries midway through the second half and the visitors could smell the century-mark on the wind and pushed hard.
The men from Welkom crossed the line four more times in the final nine minutes through replacements Lohan Lubbe and De Wet Kruger while flanker Boela Venter finished off the afternoon with his brace of tries.
