Walvis: New councillor sworn in
LEANDREA MOUERS
WALVIS BAY
Ryan Gordon, representing the Landless People’s Movement (LPM), was sworn in as a Walvis Bay local authority councillor recently.
Gordon replaces the late Stanley Bikeur who died in August.
Walvis Bay mayor Trevino Forbes welcomed Gordon on board. “The oath you just took will be a constant reminder to be of service and put the needs of the residents of Walvis above your own.”
Forbes warned Gordon that Walvis Bay is a politically mixed council and that the road will not be smooth. “There will be difference of opinion, but the most important aspect is that it is our core responsibility to ensure that each decision taken by council benefits our community without impacting the municipality negatively.”
He said the council is excited to have Gordon on board. “We wish you a fruitful and productive stay.”
Community leader
The incoming councillor was also elected as an alternate member of the management committee.
Gordon has been actively involved in the community. He is one of the founders of the Narraville Community Against Crime group and was recently elected as a member of the Narraville Committee.
He expressed his gratitude towards his community, family and friends for putting their trust in him.
“I cannot do this alone, but with the help of our community, we can make a change. Please feel free to talk to me.
“Rome was not built in a day but we have to start somewhere. We don’t want to talk about change, we want to be that change. Let us take hands and move in the right direction.
“I know our people need houses and jobs and so much more, but let’s start at a point,” he said.
