RUNDU – The Vungu-Vungu Green Scheme project doing well and most of the crops grown there are ready for harvest.

This is according to the governor of the Kavango East region, Bonny Wakudumo, who on Friday visited project to familiarise himself with the operations there.

“The crops grown at the scheme such as green and red peppers as well as maize and mahangu are doing well and most of it is ready for harvesting,” he said.

Wakudumo said a hybrid maize trial demonstration between Namibia and Zimbabwe planted at the scheme under Operation Werengendje is also doing well.

Hybrid maize

The two countries decided to test different varieties of maize seeds that can thrive in the current climatic environment Namibia experiences.

“These seeds were planted on 1 March and already the maize is ready for harvesting,” he expanded.

Wakudumo said this hybrid of maize shows that it can adapt to the country’s climate while requiring a lot of water to grow in a good timeframe.

The governor said the Kavango East regional council received N$1.2 million for horticulture practices, adding he wants to ensure horticulture farming thrives in the region.

Wakudumo said he learned that the World Food Programme (WFP) has warehouses there where the drought relief food is kept and distributed by the Namibia Red Cross Society as the partner of WFP to intended beneficiaries. - Nampa
