Mariselle Stofberg
At Windhoek High School’s recent production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’, My Zone asked the young actors and actresses what being part of such a drama production meant to them.

Anuschka Dausas (Mrs Potts)

It is important to introduce drama at school level because just like any other skill or sport or talent, it needs to be nurtured at a young age for it to flourish. It gives a young mind a chance to dwell in a different world or character and it builds perception. Some, like myself, may use that gift as a happy place to deal with harsh realities and difficult times.

Tonique Sweni (The Enchantress)

Drama helps students to communicate with and understand others in new ways. Drama also helps students develop tolerance and empathy. It also improves verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Drama is an art of expression and communication where we can take up different roles of different personalities and also learn a diverse cultures.

Stephan du Preez (Gaston)

I think in this process I have built unlikely friendships. Drama is a learning process and I’ve learnt a lot from this production.

Cayleb Zola (Beast)

In a world where our true feelings are suppressed, drama gives us a place to be our authentic selves. It gives us a platform to express our creativity and be free.

Jonathan Van Wyk (Lafau)

It gives me a platform to express myself and offers a space where there is no judgement, so you can just be yourself.

Hilia Titus (villager)

I think drama is important for school kids because it boosts their confidence when it comes to oral exams or presentations. For others it helps them overcome stage fright and for some it's just a hobby. Most importantly, if it's someone's career path, school is the best place to start so that people can make an actual career out of acting.
