The CEO of Save the Rhino Trust (SRT), Simson !Uri-#Khob, was awarded the Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa in recognition of the 30 years he has worked to save black rhinos at the trust.

He received the award from the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, on Monday night in London during the annual Tusk Conservation Awards.

The lifetime achievement award recognises outstanding dedication and exceptional continued contribution to conservation in Africa.

!Uri-#Khob has worked with SRT for 30 years, becoming CEO in 2015.

When he joined the trust in the early 1990s, Namibia’s black rhino population was just back from the brink of almost complete decimation. Today, rhino numbers have increased and poaching numbers have dropped.

Introducing !Uri-#Khob as the winner, his steadfast loyalty and hard work at SRT was highlighted as well as his “ability to connect with and inspire not only his team” but “traditional leaders, politicians, donors and even royalty” as well, which earned him the worldwide recognition.”

‘Deeply humbling’

Prince William said he spent time chatting to the award winners and finalists and that their courage, determination and commitment to African conservation is “deeply humbling”.

“Our wildlife plays a vital role in keeping nature in balance and maintaining this precious cycle of life.

“If we keep destroying or removing the threads that make up the natural tapestry of life on earth, it will simply begin to break down, exacerbating climate change still further,” he said.
