Ubi Caritas Gravestones now in Northern Industrial Area

The company name Ubi Caritas means “Where there is love” and was inspired by a popular hymn sung in Latin and English, “Ubi Caritas et amor, Ubi Caritas Deus ibi est,” which means: “Where there is love and compassion, God is there.”
Ubi Caritas Gravestones has been operating in Windhoek since 2006 and produces gravestones in a wide range of designs. Not only are its personnel highly skilled and take pride in the quality of their work, they do it with love and compassion.

A question arises immediately when you see the gravestones in the yard: Why are these people manufacturing gravestones? The answer to this question is very simple: It is a task of love. The gravestone itself is the last expression of love to a loved one who has passed away. It is only when you have experienced such a loss yourself that you really understand the meaning of grief.

The customers and the company are in a relationship with each other in such a way that several families deal with Ubi Caritas Gravestones for a number of years, in good times as well as times of drought and financial hardship.

The gravestones are manufactured out of granite, an igneous rock that is composed of four minerals, crystallised from magma that has cooled far under the earth’s surface over hundreds of years. It is very hard and does not weather easily. Granite is highly resistant to heat and scratches and requires minimal maintenance. Currently the black/grey granite is imported from South Africa because only a small range of granite is available in Namibia, and mostly more natural-looking colours. Large granite blocks are exported from Namibia to South Africa for cutting, from where the slabs are imported again to Namibia. However, Rustenburg granite from South Africa constitutes about 90% of the granite that is suitable for gravestone manufacturing, as it is one of the stronger and more consistent types of granite available.

The company was situated in Windhoek’s Southern Industrial Area on the corner of Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue and Parsons Street for ten years. It relocated in September 2019 to join its brother company, Milestone Marble and Granite, in the Northern Industrial Area at 19 Iscor Street, in the HTS Bau Building complex. This location serves as the point of sale as well as the site of manufacturing.

The artisans are skilled in the art of shaping and polishing the very hard stone into the designs ordered and sometimes designed by the customers themselves. The making of gravestones is a specialised process and enough time is needed to provide the best quality of work. Ubi Caritas Gravestones still believes in employing people instead of replacing them with machinery. Therefore, it cannot produce the 3D-modelled gravestones done by machines overseas.

The company’s gravestone designs vary from small scrolls, teddy bears, cartoon characters or animal shapes for children’s graves to adult sizes in a variety of shapes, and even large monuments.

Ubi Caritas Gravestones delivers and installs gravestones countrywide.
