Trouble in paradise
The dust in the MTC Namibia Premier League refuses to settle and it appears as if it will take a while before the league starts.
The Namibia Premier League's ordinary AGM on Thursday temporarily rejected the Fifa normalisation nommittee's directive to promote Orlando Pirates and Civics.
The NPL held its extraordinary congress where member clubs were required to submit proposals that would allow the two clubs back into the premier league as per the normalisation committee's request.
The two clubs were relegated at the end of the 2018/19 season and were bound to play first-division football.
The first division did however not take place last season, resulting in no teams being promoted.
The NPL maintained that the clubs were relegated even though no clubs were promoted.
This did not sit well with the normalisation committee, which demanded that no clubs be relegated at the end of the season.
The NPL then resolved to amend its constitution to allow teams to be voted back into the premier league for the 2019/20 season even after being relegated.
The 13 member clubs were asked to submit proposals to amend the NPL constitution and thereby reinstate the relegated clubs.
The meeting did not go according to plan for the normalisation committee, though, as none of the 13 members submitted a proposal to amend the constitution.
It is understood that the NPL is now waiting for the NC to provide them with the promotion and relegation rules for the new season, which the AGM members plan to kick off on 1 November 2019 with 13 teams. Last week Fifa normalisation committee chairperson Hilda Basson-Namundjebo said they would not be providing rules and methods to the Namibia Premier League (NPL).
After the NPL congress, the league wrote to the normalisation committee, requesting it to provide the league with rules and methods to be used to promote and relegate clubs to and from the different Namibia Football Association (NFA) leagues ahead of the 2019/20 season.
