Triple Thread triathlon victors
The FNB Sandman Triathlon, which took place in Swakopmund, produced incredible performances on Sunday.
Team Triple Thread, consisting of Phillip Seidler, Justin Vosloo and Erich Goeieman, brushed off tough competition to win the FNB Sandman Triathlon in Swakopmund on Sunday.
The trio completed the event in just over four hours.
It was Seidler and Goeieman's third FNB Sandman Triathlon ultra-event win in a row. The duo always recruit a cyclist to compliment them at the event.
Seidler (20), a 10km open-water swimmer who is aiming to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, braved the icy Atlantic Ocean and made good on a bet he had with Namibia's number-one ranked iron man competitor Tyrone Kotze (15).
“We challenged each other over the swimming stretch, and since I won, he will have to buy me a six-pack of Clausthaler, which is a non-alcoholic beer that assists with the recovery and carbo-loading for athletes.”
On social media, Seidler said individual commitment is what makes a team work.
“My team had good time in the water, lapping all contestants and winning the Tyrone bet. Vosloo, our cyclist, showed a very strong performance for his age and Goeieman, our runner, is always number one in running. Thank you to my team for this awesome achievement and taking the victory home,” he said.
Seidler, who holds various Namibian swimming records (the 400m, 800m and 1 500m in pool, as well as 5km and 10km open water records), took to the water like a fish.
He set the pace from the onset during the 1.9km swimming stage and finished it in approximately 27 minutes.
This ensured a huge gap, which Vosloo maintained during the 90km cycling stage (a combination of tar road and salt treated roads), which he completed in about two hours and 30 minutes, before Goeieman finally cruised to victory over the 21km half-marathon running stage in a time of one hour and 10 minutes.
A total of 272 competitors participated in the popular triathlon, with the start/finish and transition area located at The Mole. The event organised by OTB Sport accommodated 162 individual competitors and 37 three-member teams.
Triathletes could opt for participation in the ultra, standard (1km swim, 40km cycling and 10km run), sprint (400m swim, 20km cycling and 4km run) or mini 150m swim, 7km cycling and 3km run) categories.
Organiser Yvonne Brinkmann from OTB Sport welcomed the large number of entries and said the event was a huge success.
“This huge amount of entries we received is quite exceptional for a Namibian event. Everything also went according to plan and we did not have any incidents.”
