Top Score 7-a-side launched
Close to 80 teams will compete in the Top Score 7-a-side tournament, which was launched on Tuesday.
Top Score, Namib Mills' leading maize meal brand, launched the 20th edition of its 7-a-side football tournament at Ramblers Soccer Stadium.
The event is Namibia's oldest and largest social soccer tournament and is aimed at the business community to give employees a chance to show off their skills on the football field and socialise with colleagues.
Speaking at the launch, senior brand manager for Namib Mills, Marné Bouwer, said the company is committed to Namibia. “This sports initiative aids the company in investing in a vital staple in the development of our country – its sports.”
“A trophy collects dust but memories last forever, so we want to encourage each and every team to not only give their best in the tournament that lies ahead, but also to enjoy this opportunity to be in the company of fellow soccer lovers who continue to show support, dedication and passion towards the game and the Top Score 7-a-side tournament,” she said.
Bouwer further thanked the teams who year after year enter the tournament and welcomed teams who entered for the first time this year. “It is because of you that we will continue to dream bravely for another 20 years and more.”
Fans and supporters are encouraged to bring their camping chairs and support their favourite teams as they compete for this prestigious title.
“Without having the exact number, I'm confident to say that we had more than 300 teams entering over the years. Some teams only once or twice and some teams and corporates have participated 15 times and more,” said Ralf Behrens of the Ramblers executive committee.
In 2001, a sponsorship to the tune of N$15 000 was used for advertisement and administration expenses, while N$10 000 was allocated as prize money for the winning teams.
The sponsorship has subsequently increased to more than N$175 000, which includes prize money and administration costs, he said.
This year's top honours will earn the winners a record amount of N$59 000.
“Ramblers Club is really proud to be associated with Namib Mills and their product Top Score for 20 years now. I think there are only few relationships in the sporting community which have lasted so long and we are confident that this will be going on for years to come.”
Behrens also joked that they would be happy to give the current stakeholders of Namibian football guidance on how to run a league.
This year's edition will be played on five weekends in February and March on the Ramblers field in Pionierspark.
The beautiful game will kick off on Friday, 7 February and the group stages will be played until 29 February. Weather permitting, the knockout stages will start on Friday, 6 March, while the finals will be played on Saturday, 7 March.
Food and refreshments will be sold during the tournament.
