Namibian runner Rainhold Tomas finished 17th in the men's marathon race at the IAAF world championships in Qatar.

He ran a time of two hours, 14 minutes and 38 seconds.

The race began just before midnight on Saturday, as organisers wanted the runners to avoid the brutal daytime heat.

Despite running a good race, Tomas could not catch up with the likes of Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa, who won in a time of two hours, 10 minutes and 40 seconds.

The 29-year-old winner was followed home by countryman Mosinet Geremew (two hours, 10 minutes and 44 seconds) and Kenya's Amos Kipruto (two hours, 10 minutes and 51 seconds).

Desisa had claimed silver at the 2013 championships in Russia.

He also won the Boston Marathon in 2013 and 2015. After Boston was hit by a terror attack on the day of his 2013 triumph, Desisa donated his medal to the city.
