Tangeni Nakale Club hosts Christmas fun day
Tangeni Nakale, the owner of the Tangeni Nakale Athletics Kids Fun Run Club, hosted a Christmas fun day for kids in the Okuryangava and Okahandja Park informal settlements on Thursday.
Initiated in March 2015 by Nakale, a former long-distance athlete, the Tangeni Nakale Athletics Kids Fun Run, traditionally held in Okuryangava, is aimed at encouraging young people in Okuryangava and Okahandja Park informal settlements to participate in sports, while also identifying potential athletes among the youth.
The event attracted about 35 participants, aged between 8 and 17.
Nakale told Nampa on Thursday that the Christmas celebration is used to say thank you to the kids who compete in all the fun runs throughout the year.
“Most of the kids are on holiday but before everyone drives out of Windhoek for holidays I just wanted to say thank you to some of those kids with the gift hampers that were sponsored by Marathon Sugar,” he said.
At the same occasion, Nakale handed out certificates to five kids who were top performers throughout the year.
“We want next year to be a better year than 2017 but that will only happen if the corporate world come on board and support these young athletes while at the grassroots level as they are the future stars,” said Nakale, adding that the first fun run for 2018 will be held in March.
The athletes who received outstanding performance certificates are:
1. Phillipus Martin
2. Frans Johannes
3. Kamati Iwise
4. Paulina Nghilangua
5. Fillipus Shixungileni
