Walvis Bay Table Tennis Club (WBTTC) will host the Inter Club Championships at the Indoor Sport Complex on Saturday.
WBTTC will travel to Windhoek in August for the second leg of the tournament. According to WBTTC president Derrick Rooza, the event will provide an opportunity for coastal players to compete at a higher level and expose the quality of table tennis at the coast. The mixed tournament will be contested on a league basis and round robin matches. The club which accumulate the most points throughout the event will be pronounced champions at the end of the day. Hochland and SKW, both from Windhoek and comprising of three players per team (two teams each), confirmed their participation. WBTTC will also be organising the Cadet Junior Championships on 18 June sanctioned by the Namibian Table Tennis Association and sponsorship is urgently needed for hosting this event.
Surprisingly Namibia has no female senior players but the juniors are stepping up and competing in this category. “Former Walvis Bay Mayor Uillika Nambahu, sponsored accommodation for visiting juniors at Langstrand bungalows in 2015.
“We need corporate companies to permanently come on-board and ensure the continued success of the sport,” commented Rooza.
Juniors from all regions and young talent from the Namibian national development team will be in action.
The organisers expect at least a minimum of 60 participants.
WBTTC practise at the MOTH Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:00. The club have eight playing members and boast two national team players in Quinton Haoseb and Rooza who clinched the men’s singles title at the coastal tournament in Swakopmund. Rooza also partners Reinhold Stanley in the men’s doubles division.
They won the Walvis Bay Table Tennis open in 2015.
