Former national marathon runner Luketz Swartbooi was honoured when a street was named after him in Rehoboth on Saturday.

Swartbooi is the current Rössing Marathon record holder - which he set in 1992 - in a time of 2:11:23.

“I’m very happy that I’m being recognised. It is an honour. I thank those who thought of me and gave me this honour,” the former marathoner said.

His biggest success to date was a silver medal won at the World Championship in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1993.

In 1994, Swartbooi set his personal best in America with a time of 2:09:08, earning him the third-place spot in the Boston Marathon.
