REHOBOTH

Retired veteran marathon runner Luketz Swartbooi is urging government to consider revamping sport fields in Rehoboth.

In an interview with Sport Wrap, Swartbooi said there is so much protentional in the town, but athletes don't have enough and proper facilities.

The former runner is currently mentoring his son, whom he hopes will become as great as he was during his early years.

“Rehoboth requires so much infrastructure in order for it to produce more athletes and sport stars.

“This town's terrain is simply perfectly fitted for marathon runners and I hope I can help many athletes who aspire to become marathon runners,” he said.

Record holder

Since 1992, Swartbooi has held the record for the Rössing Marathon with a time of 2:11:23.

The former marathon runner's biggest success to date was earning a silver medal at the World Championship in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1993.

In 1994, he set his personal best in Boston with a time of 2:09:08, earning him the third-place spot in the Boston Marathon.
