Described by the Swakopmund Municipality as ‘the smile of Namibia’, Swakopmund is surrounded by the oldest desert in the world and the cold Atlantic Ocean, and is one of Namibia’s top tourist destinations. The town is also a regular participant and finalist in the Southern African Town of the Year competition hosted by the Kwela programme on DStv.
Being voted as a finalist in the western region in the first Namibia Town of the Year competition 2016, Swakopmund definitely deserves accolades.
With an average annual growth of 5.3% in the population, Swakopmund has made impressive changes to its infrastructure. Aside from the existing state-of-the-art medical facilities, accommodation establishments and recreation facilities, the shopping experience and every other industry is well represented in Swakopmund.

Towards the end of 2016, the Swakopmund Municipality says it will announce the opening of the Waterfront overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. “Counting ourselves lucky to be located in an environment with such a vast difference in landscape, we take great pride in protecting our beaches, ocean and desert. The Municipality of Swakopmund has taken charge by starting the Green Environment Project that is currently running three main activities; the recycle and sorting plant, Project Shine, and Eco-mate,” a municipality spokesperson said.
The Swakopmund recycle and sorting plants were launched during 2015 and all residents are actively contributing to disposing recyclable products in the orange bins distributed to most households.
